Week 6 Theme: Around the World

Day 1: Japanese Wave Pointillism

Required items:

  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint pots
  • Paint
  • Paper towel
  • Template/Paper to draw wave (for those that want to)
  • Pencil

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be doing pointillism (dot art) to fill in the Japanese wave. To do this, use the back end of a paintbrush and dab circles onto the paper. Experiment with different tools to create the dots like cotton swabs or pencil rubbers.

Day 2: Egyptian Cartouche

Required items:

  • Cartouche template
  • Hieroglyphics alphabet key
  • Pencil
  • Colouring pencils/felt tips
  • Scissors

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating your own cartouche with you name, just like famous ancient Egyptians! Use the cartouche template and hieroglyphics key for children to write their name in hieroglyphics. Cut it out after it is all coloured in.

English/history. Imagine you were King Tut for a day and all the things you would do. Look at building of pyramids and importance of them.

Day 3: Carnival Masks

Required items:

  • Mask with popsicle sticks to attach
  • Extra white and coloured paper
  • Glue/tape
  • Colouring pencils/felt tips

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating a Carnival mask like they do in Brazil! Give the child the mask template and create their own mask inspired by Carnival. Should have bright colours, feathers, big toppers and more. Encourage them to add pieces at the top to make the mask taller. Show them the example ones first for inspiration.

Day 4: Watercolour Fans

Required items:

  • A4 paper
  • Watercolour paints
  • Water pots
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper towel
  • Glue/stapler/tape to attach bottom

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating a watercolour fan! Use the watercolours to paint a nice nature scene. Follow the video to fold the fan up and attach it in the middle!

Religion. Discuss different celebrations around the world, like Chinese New Year. Discuss celebrations in your own cultures and their importance.

Day 5: Worry Dolls

Required items:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Paper to draw on/person template
  • Scissors
  • Colouring pencils/felt tips
  • glue

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating a worry doll! Draw a person onto a piece of paper – it could be whoever or someone they trust. Decorate the person with colours, cut them out and stick them onto a popsicle stick. Can do this more than once. These are like Guatemalan worry dolls who are meant to take their fears away.
