Optional work for Year 5 Pupils for week commencing 13.4.20

Dear Year 5 Pupils,

We hope you are enjoying the Easter holidays and have had a look at some of the activities and resources we put up last week. The week’s work will remain there for a while longer so if you have not completed it, don’t worry, it you can do it at a later date convenient to you. In the meantime, we have provided further learning for the week beginning 13th April 2020.

Complete the activities in your exercise books if you cannot access a printer – just make sure you write the date and title of the lesson/task. Please work within your own schedule and at your own pace and ensure you have a break in between each subject.

Happy Easter Monday! Here is a fun maths Easter themed mystery activity for you to solve (5Ma13.4). It involves using a cross-section of your mathematical skills including Roman numerals, use of 4 operations and conversions of measures. Solve all the clues to solve the mystery of the Easter bunny costume.

History

60 minutes

Read through the PowerPoint (5Hi13.4) to learn why Women’s History Month is important. Read on to find out more about why Billie Jean King and the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and discover why it was such an important event in gender equality.

Use the facts and ideas from yesterday’s information sheet (and your own research) to plan your ‘persuasive poster to save the ocean’. Sift through your notes to decide which key facts will be relevant and suitable. You also need to identify at least 5 persuasive features you could include in your poster –use this planning template (5Eng14.4) to structure your ideas.

Can you answer each question in 6 seconds? Complete the Times tables test (5Ma14.4a).

Next, have a go at the Fractions Code Cracker sheet (5Ma14.4b) to practise your calculation skills for fractions as well as converting between improper and mixed fractions– solve the calculations to work out the answer to the joke!

Geography

60 minutes

In the next few weeks, Y5 will be looking at the vast and populous continent of Asia in depth. In order to prepare for this, let’s find out more about the countries within Asia (5Gg14.4). Will you be able to locate all 48 countries?

St George’s Day is on 23rd April! Have a go at ‘The Mystery of the Missing Lance’ (5Ma17.4) – a St George’s day Maths Mystery Game. This will enable you to revise the work we did in the Spring term about Decimals including:

Clue 1 - Rounding Decimals - Remember to draw the arrow on the relevant column and look at the ‘next door neighbour’ to determine whether to ‘round up’ or ‘keep the same’.

Clue 2 – Multiply and Divide by 10, 100, 1000 - use the place value grid to determine where the digits move.

Clue 3 – Adding and Subtracting decimals – remember to line up the decimal point!

Clue 4 - Measures as Decimals – look back at your measurement conversion rules.

Clue 5 – Equivalent percentages – Use your known facts and rules of equivalents to convert the fraction to the percentage.
