Day 1: Animal Silhouettes

Visit this website to see what we are making today: Click here

Required items:

  • White A4 paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Black paper
  • Colouring tools of choice

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating a cool silhouette of your favourite animal! Choose an animal with an interesting pattern on their skin/fur. Draw their markings onto the white paper then colour it in, making sure to cover the entire piece. After that, draw their outline onto a piece of black paper and cut it out, then glue it onto your paper.

Maths. Discuss patterns and shapes they see in the markings of their favourite animal.

Day 2: Lines in Animals

Visit this website for a free template of a rabbit: Click here

Required items:

  • White A4 paper x2
  • Felt tips/watercolours
  • Black felt tip
  • Glue/tape
  • scissors

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be painting or drawing a nice watercolour background. Imagine it is the habitat of your animal of choice! While you let that dry, it’s time to work on your animal. You can draw your own or use the rabbit template from above. If you draw your own, inside the animal you need to draw lines about 1 cm apart that are round (look at the bunny to see what I mean). In between each of the long lines, you need to draw short, diagonal lines in black felt tip to create texture. Cut out your animal and then stick it on to the background you created.

Maths. Challenge children to use a ruler to measure out the distance between lines and use a ruler while drawing their short, diagonal lines.

Day 3: Food Chains

Visit this website to see what we are making today: Click here

Required items:

  • Coloured paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating food chains! Pick a food chain that you know well and think about the animals involved in it. You can have as many levels to it as you want! Start off with your producer or primary consumer, making them very small. Create them out of different bits of paper. Then make your secondary consumer, making sure their mouth is open so they can fit the consumer below them inside and so on with the other consumers. At the end, you will have a very cool science-art piece!

Links to other subjects:

Science. Discuss food chains and how animals rely on one another to meet their needs in a habitat.

Day 4: Peacocks

Visit this website to see what we’re making today: Click here

Required items:

  • Coloured paper
  • Black felt tip
  • pencil
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • An old CD (or just cut a circle shape out of paper)
  • Clothes pegs (or attach a popsicle stick so it is like a puppet)

What you’re doing:

Today, you will be creating a peacock! Cut out a body shape, some facial features and a big circle shape. Trace your hands to create the feathers (about 3-4 hands). Assemble your peacock and add some feathers if you have them! At the end, attach clothes pegs for the legs or attach it to a popsicle stick so it is like a puppet.
